Three ways to create an engagement ring
The decision is not always limited to choosing between a finished ring and starting entirely from the beginning. Most engagement ring purchases fall into one of three categories.

Ready-made ring
The diamond and setting are already combined. You can view the finished proportions, inspect the ring on the hand and purchase it with fewer design decisions.
Semi-custom or existing setting
You choose a centre diamond and pair it with an existing setting or semi mount. Certain elements such as metal colour, ring size, centre shape or engraving may still be adjusted without designing the complete structure from the beginning.
Fully custom ring
The setting is developed around the selected centre diamond, wearer’s preferences and practical requirements. This may involve sketches, CAD development, proportion approval and individual manufacturing.
When should you choose a ready made engagement ring?
Ready-made does not mean generic. A finished ring can still feel deeply personal when its diamond, proportions and design genuinely reflect the wearer.
The principal advantage is certainty. You can see the completed ring, assess its scale on the hand and understand how the centre diamond, side stones, band and setting work together.

When should you choose a custom engagement ring?
Custom design is useful when the ring must solve a specific aesthetic or practical requirement. It gives you control over the elements that cannot be achieved by simply resizing an existing ring.

- The wearer has a distinctive jewellery style
- The setting must fit an unusually shaped diamond

Customisation is especially valuable for fancy shaped natural diamonds. The exact length, width, depth, corners and points of an oval, pear, marquise, emerald or radiant diamond can affect the setting structure.
Designing around the selected stone allows the prongs, basket, gallery rail and band proportions to respond to that diamond instead of forcing it into a setting created for different measurements.
How does the custom engagement ring process work?
The exact process differs between jewellers, but a considered custom project usually moves through the following stages.
- Discuss the idea and budget. Explain the preferred style, proposal date, centre stone priorities and total comfortable budget.
- Select the centre diamond. Compare natural diamonds by shape, measurements, colour, clarity, proportions, grading report and appearance.
- Choose the metal. Confirm whether the ring will be made in platinum, white gold, yellow gold or rose gold.
- Confirm the ring size. Consider the band width and whether the design will be easy to resize later.
- Develop the design. The jeweller may prepare a sketch, design proposal or CAD model.

- Begin manufacturing. Production should start only after the important measurements and design details have been approved.
- Complete setting and finishing. The diamonds are set, the metal is finished and the ring is polished.

How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Ready made rings normally require less time because the main design and manufacturing have already been completed. Resizing or a minor adjustment may still be necessary.
A custom ring can require several weeks because the process may include diamond sourcing, design discussions, CAD revisions, approval, casting, stone setting, finishing and inspection. Complex settings, unusual side diamonds or unavailable materials may require additional time.
Do not plan around a general promise such as “custom rings take two weeks.” Ask for a written estimate based on your actual design and include time for possible adjustments before the proposal date.

Does a custom engagement ring cost more?
Not always, but custom design often includes additional design and manufacturing work. The final amount depends on the centre diamond, side stones, metal, complexity and production requirements.

Compare complete quotations rather than only the setting price. The total should clearly state the centre diamond, side stones, metal, design work, manufacturing, VAT, delivery, warranty and aftercare.

Should you choose the centre diamond first?
Choosing the diamond first is often the better approach when the stone is a fancy shape or has distinctive measurements. The setting can then be developed around its actual outline, depth, corners and points.
It also prevents a common problem: finding a setting you love and later discovering that it cannot safely accommodate the preferred diamond shape or size.
- Confirm the natural origin and grading laboratory.
- Review the report number and exact measurements.
- Inspect the diamond in video and, where possible, in person.
- Reserve the selected diamond before approving the final CAD.
- Design the prongs and setting around that individual stone.

Will the wedding band sit flush?
Wedding band fit should be discussed before approving the engagement ring profile. A low basket, large centre stone, protruding prongs or decorative gallery can prevent a straight wedding band from sitting directly beside the ring.
This is not automatically a design fault. Some engagement rings are intentionally paired with curved or shaped wedding bands. The important point is to decide which result you want before manufacturing begins.

Can you use a photograph as a custom ring reference?

It should guide the conversation rather than become an instruction to reproduce another brand’s signature design exactly. Ask the jeweller to identify the elements you love and develop an original interpretation suited to your diamond, proportions and practical requirements.
Combining several references is often more useful than copying one ring. You might prefer the band from one design, the profile from another and the prongs from a third.
