The amount originally paid for a diamond is not automatically its current resale value.
Retail price may have included the setting, brand, manufacturing, taxes, marketing and the sales process. The secondary market prices natural diamonds on their actual characteristics and their current comparable sale price. The two numbers are not the same.
This guide explains what drives the resale value of a natural diamond, how a transparent evaluation works, and what to expect when you bring a stone to Ratan Sajan Diamonds.
What sets the resale price of a natural diamond
The GIA certificate confirms the 4Cs of your stone. The resale offer depends on how the market values those 4Cs today.
Carat weight
Price per carat rises sharply at certain thresholds: 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct and so on. A stone that sits just above one of these milestones is worth considerably more per carat than one just below. Carat weight is the single biggest lever in resale value.
Cut grade
GIA Excellent and Very Good cuts have more buyers and command stronger prices. Poor cut grades reduce the pool of interested buyers even when the colour and clarity are high.
Colour
The most liquid colours in the resale market are D to H. Stones from I to M are still saleable but at a wider discount to retail. Fancy colours (yellow, pink, blue) follow a different and more volatile market.
Clarity
Eye-clean stones from VS2 upward are easier to resell. SI1 and SI2 grades that are still eye-clean can perform reasonably. Heavy inclusions reduce value regardless of the grade printed on the certificate.
Shape
Round brilliants have the deepest secondary market and the most predictable pricing. Fancy shapes (oval, cushion, emerald, pear) are in strong demand but buyer depth varies by size and quality combination.
Provenance and certification
A current GIA, HRD or IGI certificate adds confidence to a buyer. Uncertified stones require independent grading, which adds time and reduces the offer. Conflict-free origin documentation from a reputable source is increasingly valued.
The honest reality of natural diamond resale
Natural diamonds do not behave like equities. Their value is not purely financial; it includes the permanence, the rarity, and the irreplaceable nature of the stone. Resale prices for natural diamonds have held more stable than other luxury goods over long periods, but a stone purchased at full retail will not sell for the same figure shortly after purchase in most circumstances.
Ratan Sajan operates differently from a pawn shop or a quick-cash buyer. The evaluation considers the actual comparable sale price of your stone's characteristics, not a generic low offer designed to maximise a quick resale margin.
How the evaluation process works
Bring your diamond and its certificate to the Ratan Sajan Diamonds office in Dubai. The evaluation covers:
- Verification of the certificate against the stone
- Physical examination of the cut, proportions, fluorescence and any characteristics not captured in grading alone
- Current market comparison for stones of the same weight, shape, colour and clarity
- A clear offer with a full explanation
You are under no obligation to accept. The process is private and there is no pressure.
