Two 1 carat diamonds can have the same GIA colour and clarity grades yet look completely different when viewed in person.
One may appear bright, crisp and beautifully balanced. Another may look darker, smaller or less refined, even though the grading reports initially seem similar.
The difference is often hidden in the details that buyers overlook: cut quality, face-up measurements, proportions, inclusion placement, fluorescence and the way the diamond responds to light.
Cut quality changes everything
A well-cut diamond displays an attractive balance of brightness, fire and scintillation. A poorly proportioned diamond may allow light to escape, creating dark areas or weak sparkle.
Proportions matter more than most buyers think
Table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle and pavilion angle must work together. A diamond should not be selected from one percentage alone.
Fluorescence can affect appearance and price
Fluorescence is not automatically a defect. Assess each diamond individually in different lighting conditions.
Clarity is not just a grade
Two diamonds with the same clarity grade may not appear identical. Inclusion placement, size and visibility all matter beyond the grade itself.
